From sunrise to sunset

Watching the sun rise and set again. They’re pleasures so rare for those like me, city dwellers robbed of the horizon by tall buildings.

But in the Pacific, where the sun rises and sets, respectively, around 7am and 7 pm, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing these shows nearly every day.

In Fiji it was irresistible: peering from a bedside window, one could see when the first brushstrokes of red graced the sky. If I wanted to see it all up close, the beach was just a few paces away. So little effort.

In New Zealand, away from the big centres, the sunsets have been just as accessible, be it from the street, the coast, the edge of the lake, or by the side of the road.

Here is a selection of the best moments from sun-up to sundown.
