What a $5 hotel in India looks like
I want to find the little lying bastard who told me the for $5 you can get a good, clean, comfortable hotel room anywhere in India.
He should suffer for warping my expectations in such an inhumane way.
This is what you get for $5 in the town of Kottayam, Kerala state.
The bed:
A colony of mildew is positioned to jump on your head in your sleep and take over your brain. The pillow case comes pre-soiled with one (1) pubic hair.
The sink
The bathroom
A 20-watt lightbulb provides mood lighting, casting a honeyed glow on the tile grime.
The spiders are complimentary.

I think it is pretty obvious that when you go that low for a room price, it is kind of expected that you are not getting the best room. Common sense counts most of the time.
Jenkz: you’re right, but our expectations are shaped by experience and hearsay. I found quite decent rooms for $5 in Southeast Asia and Central America. In other parts of India, a $6-7 room can be lovely. So common sense is not so common sometimes.
the spiders’ eyes can be seen! =O
Roberto,
These photos made me cringe! For me, the deal-breaker was the spiders. They’re gigantic! Hell no would I let them be my roommates.
I had a similar thing happen when I went to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Some British backpackers in Malaysia had given me a business card for the hotel they’d stayed in a few weeks before.
“Really cheap and really nice!” they’d said. It was US$7.50 a night. When I got there, I found out that place was a run-down hellhole! Although not quite as bad as yours.
The next day, I immediately moved into a super-nice hotel that cost US$9.50 a night. I’ve never been so happy to spend more money!

P.S. I discovered your wonderful blog AGES ago to respond to a comment Bianca wrote on the other blog I wrote for, Vagablogging.net
Inspired by your work on Mojotrotters, I re-designed my travel blog. It’s the website I’ve provided.
holy shit!!
no way!
que horror! is true we can see their eye!
oublie le $5…not even for free!
Unfortunately, Marcus, it was wither this room or $20 at a three-star. Kottayam has lousy lodging options. I took the room, making sure to sleep in a silk sleeping sack and knowing (hoping) the spiders wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t bother them.
I was out of there by the crack of dawn.
Thanks for your nice comments on our blog. Your site looks great.
What do the cheap hotels cost in Goa?
derum: Depends on the town. At Palolem, the backpackers’ beach of choice, seaside bungalows start at 400-500 rupees. You can find cheaper rooms in guesthouses away from the beach.
[...] of the terrific Mojotrotters blog, had this example of hitting rock-bottom as a frugal traveler: What a $5 hotel in India looks like. I think we’ve all faced that problem at some point. You’ve arrived in town too [...]
That’s WAY too much for that room – should be $1-3! Makes for a good blog post / story though
The spiders? One LOOOOONG silent scream heard only by dogs.
I love what you guys tend to be up too. Such clever work and exposure!
Keep up the superb works guys I’ve incorporated you guys to blogroll.
I am really loving the theme/design of your web site.
Do you ever run into any web browser compatibility
problems? A couple of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in
Explorer but looks great in Safari. Do you have any tips to help fix this issue?
