When someone dies Highlands of PNG, the village gathers for days in collective mourning, called a haus krai. To attend a funeral, where the bereaved wail loudly and publicly, is a journey that tries one’s body and emotions. That’s what we learned when we were invited to grieve for a man that was recently beheaded. Listen to the report.

U N I Q U E!!
Long live to different cultures and all we can learn through them.
Give us more please!
Lindo, Bi.
What an extraordinary story. To hear the actual members of the community relate the facts surrounding this tragedy as well as part of the mourning ceremony, is an especially touching way to share what must have been a very emotional experience for you both. Good reporting.
Nossa, Bia. Estou impressionado.
Tks everybody for your nice words, I’m happy to share that unique moment with you.
Dani: The first guy, who was decapitated: I asked many times to different people, but the best they could tell me is that the deceased “had mental problems, thanks to his marijuana smoking habit”. Why exactly this made him be killed it’s still a mystery to us. (BTW they always seem to associate marijuana and mental problems back there). The other guy we really don’t know. But one thing about this society is that they are somewhat violent (specially in the Highlands). They are warriors, and they kill for land, for love, for anything actually. It happens a lot, unfortunately!
