As estranhas estátuas de Koh Kong (Fotos)
No Cambodja, na cidade de Koh Kong (próxima à fronteira da Tailândia), há um retiro espiritual budista com uma bizarra coleção de esculturas em frente ao rio.
Nas fotos abaixo você vai ver estátuas pra lá de sádicas, como a de uma pessoa sendo serradas ao meio enquanto é observada por um garuda, pássaro da mitologia budista.
Pergunte a pessoas diferentes qual é o seu significado e você obterá respostas distintas: elas foram feitas pelo Khmer Rouge, para manter as pessoas afastadas da religião. Não, elas foram feitas pelos budistas, e mostram o inferno daqueles que escolhem uma vida de adultério e pecado.
É difícil obter uma resposta precisa, já que o Khmer Rouge destruiu tanto da cultura do Cambodja durante seu reinado de terror, que durou quatro anos. Você precisa então usar a imaginação, o que nesse lugar não vai ser tão difícil assim.

Bizarre pictures. They are similar in appearance to those we see in Hindu and Tibetan temples, but the context and the themes are grotesque. Reminded me of that famous statue of children playing in a Stalingrad fountain in the middle of WWII rubble.
No wonder the population is confused about their interpretation.
These pictures would merit a good newspaper article. Why don’t you try?
Yes, indeed they are depictions of “narok” (Buddhist Hell), and there are similar depictions in Thailand (my home country). I am trying to remember one of the temples not too far outside of Bangkok, but it has been years since I was there and I can’t remember it off the top of my head (sorry).
One thing to note is that the figures show more of a Western influence in their facial features – maybe combined with an Indian influence. The faces certainly don’t look Khmer.
